\nThese special sets are so aloof.<\/p>\n
\nSuddenly I’m plain and ugly, who needs me anymore?<\/p>\n
\nhow could he just discard me, for a few lines of silver glitter?<\/p>\n
\nbut remember my newest set has quotes, on both sides of the card!<\/p>\n
\nbut I still have the last laugh, you need me for that Master Set!<\/p>\n

\nThere’s only one issue, from Skybox, that gets my respect.<\/p>\n
\nFrom TOS to Deep Space Nine and everything in between.<\/p>\n
\nAnd the cards won’t break your piggy bank, if you know what I mean.<\/p>\n

\nBuy a box, it’s guaranteed for sure

\nTHE COMMON CARD<\/p>\n
\nI’ve been tossed aside too often,
\nFor a promo or an auto that promised more.
\nYet I protest,
\nI have pocketfuls of wisdom,
\nPlease don’t disregard me yet.<\/p>\n
\nIn the aristocratic company,
\nOf foils, box-toppers, and holograms.
\nSo I lay low, hoping somebody,
\nWould keep me long enough to understand
\nMy words they are still part of,
\nStar Trek’s vast, poetic land.<\/p>\n
\nBut I get no notice.
\nJust a come on from another of Kirk’s costume cards.
\nI do declare there were times that I was so lonesome I took some comfort there,
\nOooh la, la, la…<\/p>\n
\nNothing changes.
\nI’m not the height of fashion like the other cards,
\nWho peer at me like strangers from shining plastic sleeves,
\nYet when I’m bent do I not damage?
\nWhen I’m thrown do I not fall?
\nAfter changes and new series, common cards are still the same,
\nStill the underdog of card collectors, that part doesn’t change.<\/p>\n
\nFor in our quotes and observations,
\nLive an endless repertoire.
\nShuffle us, re-arrange us and hold us to the light,
\nYou will discover,
\nA never-ending story filled with new Star Trek insights.<\/p>\n
\nFor there are those, who know astronomy or physics or the mysteries of the sea,
\nIn us you’ll see, something they don’t know.<\/p>\n
\nAnd it carries the reminder, of every hand that laid it down,
\nOr looked with disappointment at its lack of name or fame,

\nThe common card gets no respect
\nIn a complete set they have quite an effect
\nWithout them no set is complete
\nTo find each one can be an outstandind feat
\nMakes no difference if sport or non-sport
\nThe lesat likely card is the hardest to court
\nIt is easy to find all of the set`s stars
\nFinding Joe Common is harder by far
\nWhen buying cards to finish a set
\nTrying to find the last common is an unsafe bet
\nI have been buying cards for over 50 years
\nAnd the search for a last card can bring me to tears
\nTis always a joy to find a last card
\nThe long hunt then seems not so hard
\nThis is the end of my common card tale

\n‘Twas the plight of the commons, cards strewn ‘cross the table
\nIt had been quite a log night (thank God for pay cable).
\nThe wrappers were everywhere; I tried to be neat
\nBut most landed on the floor, underneath my feet.<\/p>\n
\nI opened up the boxes; the smell was so grand.
\nThe odor of new cards – best aroma yet made
\nLet’s hope it someday becomes a new scent for Glade!<\/p>\n
\nAnd tingling went from my head right down to my toes.
\nWould this be the pack that yielded an autograph?
\nOr maybe all commons – the odds were more than half.<\/p>\n
\nWhile all the while trying to remain laid-back.
\nOne common, two commons, they all looked the same
\nAs each new card appeared more excitement came.<\/p>\n
\nAnd all of that excitement was quickly chilled.
\nBut wait, what did my wandering eyes then see?
\nIt’s Bill and Leonard – their PriceLine ad on TV!<\/p>\n
\nAnd reached into the box and grabbed the next pack.
\nI paused for a moment and prayed to the Gods
\nTo ask that my box stayed true to “stated odds”.<\/p>\n
\nThat its contents went flying up into the air.
\nBut as those few cards flew all over the place
\nI caught a glimpse of something that I could embrace.<\/p>\n
\nA shiny new “Crew Card”, now lying on the floor.
\nI panicked and sweated and audibly prayed
\nThat our cats stayed away from where the card laid.<\/p>\n
\nAnd gave the nearest feline a boot in the tail.
\n“Get out of here, you furrballs, and don’t come back!”
\nThreatening the lot of them with another smack.<\/p>\n
\nThis beauty of a card was certainly a hit!
\nUnconsciously I swept all commons to the side
\nAs if they were flowers that had long ago died.<\/p>\n
\nI placed the card in a screw-down for protection.
\nAnd then I continued on my now-merry way
\nKnowing that the collation would turn out okay.<\/p>\n
\nThose poor forgotten commons remained uncaressed.
\nLike countless grains of sand found on the beach
\nThe commons lay there, easily within my reach.<\/p>\n
\nAnd I had reached the meager limits of my fervor –
\nThere they all were, just staring me right in the face,
\nTwo boxes worth of commons, not-so-neatly in place.<\/p>\n
\nBut it was something that caused my eyes to twitch.
\nThese commons were begging to just have a chance
\nTo show that chase cards are only made to enhance.<\/p>\n
\nBut more for the memories that it somehow tells.
\nSo here were the commons, ready to entertain
\nWith a story better than any by Mark Twain.<\/p>\n
\nI continued with my work, with nary a break.
\nAnd when I was done, with commons all in a row,
\nThe story they told was now ready to flow.<\/p>\n
\nAnd immediately I found that I was sent
\nWay back to the sixties, the time of my youth
\nWhen a show named “Star Trek” spoke the truth.<\/p>\n
\nWere much more clever than those of the old bards.
\n“Live Long and Prosper” has always been my fave
\nBut then there were others that I just had to save.<\/p>\n
\nIt’s lines like those that struck me as clever.
\nAnother of Spock’s quotes, “Vulcans never bluff.”
\nProves writing this show couldn’t have been that tough.<\/p>\n
\nOl’ Bones wasn’t around, but his words had survived.
\nAnd Chekov, Sulu, Uhura and all the rest
\nWere quoted on the commons – nothing but their best.<\/p>\n
\nBut this is capitalism – and what did you expect???
\nSo here’s to the commons, the backbone of card sets.
\nWithout them, those chase cards are nothing but “pets”!<\/p>\n
\n
\nfinding just commons in a pack evokes a heavy sigh.
\nBut finding a special auto or other bonus card, you see,
\nCan fill an entire room with raucous shouts of glee.<\/p>\n
\nsome are a joy to read, the kind you can study for days.
\nOther sets are flawed, in their wording and their condition.
\nMaybe the artists missed the boat with their new rendition.<\/p>\n
\nsatisfied to find a set which has everything it should.
\nEach detail of production, from wrapper to rewards within,
\nKeep us buying more and more, hoping to score a win.<\/p>\n
\nso I’d like to propose a toast and a salute on their behalf.
\nCommon cards won’t make us scream or thank the gods above–
\nBut they can give us wisdom and truth, and a little bit to love.<\/p>\n

\nTwas a TOS set most common indeed
\nBut for the true Trek fan it was in fact most keen.
\nThe images set the memories afire
\nOf Spock and Kirk and the Pon Far pire.
\nThe Big 3 got the action and the rest got satisfaction from the least
\ntime on screen, the fans did just as much gleen.
\nThe adventures of the Enterprise crew started with a canceled series and
\nfrom there it grew.
\nWho would of known after 40 years, all the cash the fans have spent,
\nwould have made Paramount rich and content.
\nMy home is a shrine to the alter of Trek…..most people I show it to
\nthink it is dreck.<\/p>\n
