Base Set
In May 2009, the new Star Trek reboot came to the big screen. Although, many fans had been hesitant about embracing a new crew in our familiar and beloved crew, the movie was a big success, grossing $257 million on the big screen at the time of this writing. Rittenhouse, of course, was ready for it with their card set. This set released on May 6. 2009, which was a few days prior to the release of the movie. There were 81 cards in the base set, with the back offering a quick synopsis. A few of the cards show us Spock’s birth, a scene cut from the movie. Each box included two autograph and/or costume cards per box. (Total of 2)
Inserts
- 9-card Star Trek Movie Star cards with images of the new cast.
- 6 Behind the Scenes with J. J. Abrahams cards showing the director interacting with the cast on the set.
- U.S.S. Enterprise cards featuring close up shots of the ship. None of the first 3 insert sets offer much in the way of text.
- 5 autograph cards, including the full cast of new crew members, writers and directors.
- 11 costume cards, featuring film-worn uniforms of all the main cast members, except Scotty.
Autograph Variations
- Zachary Quinto’s signature varies from Z Qnto to Zachary Quinto and “full signatures” command a higher price.
- Eric Bana has a small number of cards where he signed on the back and on the front.
There was a small issue with counterfeit Chris Pine autograph cards on Ebay. Although difficult to tell in a scan, it was clear once received that these cards were poorly done copies.
Costume Variations
- Spock, McCoy and Sulu costume cards have a variant where the command stripes are showing. It varies from one to two complete bands.
Promos
- The P1 was for general distribution.
- The P2 was from NSU Volume 20, Issue #2.
CP1 was from the 2009 Spring Philly Show. - The P3 was the binder exclusive.
- A 20-card promo set was commissioned by CBS for their own use. It included 19 cards and a USB card (done up in the same style as the common card set.)The set is numbered PP1-PP20, with PP17 being the USB card. Rittenhouse sent most of the sets to CBS but had a few sets to offer at the Philly Show as prizes. Sets of the 19 cards appear on Ebay, but the USB card is harder to find. It was sent by CBS to websites, so they could upload wallpaper found on the USB for fans to get. That removed a good number of the cards from the hands of collectors.
Misc. Items
- Album with exclusive promo card (P3)
- Marked and unmarked archive box (unknown quantity). Archive boxes do not include the 6-case incentive card or the posters.
- There where two case toppers, a large folded Spock Poster and a large folded Kirk Poster. These are on poster paper stock and not trading cards.
- The 3-case dealer incentive was a piece of an attache case used at Starfleet Headquarters.
- The 6-case incentive was originally advertised as a Starfleet badge card limited to 80. Shortly before release, it was learned that Paramount had actually sent two types of badges, the small gold badge seen on cadets and the larger silver badges seen on the crew members on board the ship. Both types of cards are listed as RC3. The Starfleet Cadet badge was numbered x/65 and the Starfleet Badge card was numbered to x/40. To make the StarFleet Badges even more unique, the badges include the 4 main disciplines in various rarities:15 Medical Badges, 10 Command Badges, 10 Sciences Badges and 5 Engineering Badges. All share the RC3 numbering.
Steve Charendoff says, “We asked for costumes and props, and the studio was very generous and gave us a lot of assets. We got one piece of clothing from almost the entire main cast. I was visiting the studios when they brought out the pins and offered me a stack of both the gold cadet and silver bridge pins. I asked if it was possible to get more, but what they offered was all we could get. We simply made the best out of what was there, and I certainly was pleased. Keeping each pin/badge intact was the right thing to do, considering that they were each small enough to fit on a trading card. The results, I believe, were possibly the best cards we’ve produced — maybe the nicest and most impactful cards any company has ever produced for any movie card set. I really can’t think of another card or type of card that has had as much significant, since these are actual, intact props that are so visible throughout the movie. Cutting them up simply wasn’t an option that I wanted to pursue, and although doing so would have enabled us to make more cards, it just wasn’t the right way to go. It’s not unprecedented to make such rare cards, although we tend not to do that very often. Sometimes you just gotta go with it — and we did. I couldn’t be more pleased with the outcome.” At the time of it’s release, the Engineering Badge was selling for $5-6000 and the others at $2-3000 for the command card and up for the medical and science. - Rittenhouse’s Wrapper Rewards program offered collectors the chance to pick up S10, Spock Prime, from the Movie Stars Insert set
